Have you ever been watching Youtube and someone mentions how much fun they are having or how much money they are making? Thankfully today you can become a video editor, create your own Youtube Channel or start editing videos for someone else.
Yes, video editing can be a good and money-making career. It doesn’t have to be just for Youtube. There are a lot of video editors that work on individual projects or business commercials that are quite successful and sought after in the industry.
Let’s take a look at how video editing can be a great job!
Quick: How to learn video editing?
This is to toot my own horn 🎉 but I have a Free (and paid) video editing course over at www.youngvideocreators.com in case you need to learn some (sweet) skillz.
What’s the best way to make money from youtube? Youtube is obviously much more than video editing but the income ceiling is much higher than “just editing videos for people”.
There a lot of ways of making money on Youtube. Affiliate links (you get a percentage of purchase when someone buys something) that you place in the description are a common way to generate income.
YouTube ads: One of the best ways to make money on Youtube is through YouTube ads because it’s one of the most effective methods and you get paid every time there’s a click or view. Depending on what niche of Youtube videos you are creating the amount can vary drastically. Essentially, the two highest-paid niches are kid-friendly material and anything with financial (credit cards, banks, mortgages, and insurance).
Sponsor Deals are the last of the three big ways to make money on Youtube. This is when a company will pay you to showcase an ad inside your video. Some YouTubers run ads, have a Sponsor deal all in the same video. That can get overwhelming for the viewer.
Some smaller options are Pateron, Info Products, Youtube Subscriptions, Product Placements, and Live Streaming,
As I said, there is a lot more than “Video Editing” to a personal Youtube channel. You need to have relevant content for your audience, be worthwhile to watch to your audience then rinse and repeat.
Editing For Others
This is by far the easiest way to get into video editing and make a career out of it.
Video editing can be a very long process for people that don’t develop the skill set to edit faster at the same time improving the quality.
On average some YouTubers spend 6-10 hours editing a 10 min video. Since you are a ninja at editing you could come in, take their content, and finish it in 2 hours. This is why a lot of YouTubers will hire out their video editing process to someone else.
One way to start finding client work is to go to Youtube channels that are between 15k-100k (or more) subscribers, watch their content, see if you can make it better, find the email listed on the Youtube channel “about” section and send them an email. Ask them if they would like to have an extra 10 hours of life back each week 🙂
Here is an example of a “Hire an Editor” website — PS. It’s actually me! www.marketinghero.digital
It would be wise to have a Vimeo page set up for some of your work so you can show off what you do.
Most editors for Youtube videos charge between $65 – $100 an hour. So if you can edit 2-3 videos a day you can see how profitable this career can be.
Sidenote: When you start your own editing business make sure you ask an account (or the internet) how much to put away for taxes 🙂 Also, Wave accounting is a great place to track your money in and out. Plus send invoices to get paid.
Businesses will pay a lot of money to have a well-produced video to promote their business or new initiative.
There is really no limit to how much companies will pay for a commercial. It could be up to the millions of dollars. On average a very well-produced video for a mid/large company would be around 5k-10k. Obviously, there are a lot of factors involved in making a video like this.
It might have to include actors, props, expensive video equipment, rented spaces, rented items, careful timing, and precise preparation.
Often times the video editor is not the owner of the business of these video creation companies so you most likely have a salary of 50k – 75k depending on your level of experience.
According to Wikipedia “An independent film, independent movie, indie film, or indie movie is a feature film or short film that is produced outside the major film studio system, in addition to being produced and distributed by independent entertainment companies”
These films are more of a passion project than a source of income. These are the films that are often filmed and shot with “Art” in mind. They are very intentional in staying true to the rules of cinematography and also breaking the rules at the right moments to make an emotional impact.
Filmmakers and editors have always been looking for a big break to get their films seen. It’s not easy with all of the competition in Hollywood, so they’re going indie. There are some success stories that people might be surprised about.
Here are several noteworthy films that are indie that made it to the “big screen”
** Just FYI — these movies are NOT kid-friendly **
American Beauty — An indie film about an American dad who becomes disillusioned with his existence and begins to hunger for fresh excitement in his life. It won a ton of awards at the Oscars including Best Actor, Best Screen Play, Best Director, and several others.
The Breakfast Club — An indie film and a coming of age story with five high school students from different walks of life endure a Saturday detention with a very strict principle.
The Blair Witch Project — A indie film about two people getting lost in the woods and being chased by an unknown witch. The movie is known for its overly shaky camera movement. Many memes have birthed from this movie.
Donnie Darko — Last one I promise, This is a cult film that gained a lot of popularity after it had a run in theaters. It’s about a teenager named Donnie Darko who sleepwalks out of his house and sees a giant, demonic-looking rabbit called Frank. The rabbit proceeds to tell Donnie the world will end in 28 days.
Sometimes these films are picked up at big movie festivals and taken to Hollywood but that is very rare.
If you want to make a career out of video editing in the indie film industry it will be challenging because often times these movies are more of a place to show off “art skill” vs “entertainment”.
It is a good place to show and grow your skill set as an editor but doesn’t expect that “Lambo Money” to be flooding in.
Video editing can be a great career. Oddly enough it hasn’t been until the rise of Youtube that that career was a valid option. There wasn’t much of a need for editors pre-Youtube and the video revolution. The fastest way to become a well-paid editor is to start approaching other Youtubers with a higher sub count and asking them if they would like an extra 10-15 hours of life back haha.
