Watching videos on TikTok can take up a lot of storage on your phone without you realizing it. The more time you spend on the app, the more cache and data your phone stores, which can slow down your phone’s performance. If your TikTok account is causing your phone to run low on storage, there are three ways to free up storage.
To free storage on your phone from TikTok, you can clear the cache in the app, download your videos instead of watching them on the app, or purchase an SD card for additional storage. You can use any of these methods or a combination of the three to free up your phone’s storage.
Let’s take a step-by-step look at these three methods, so you can decide which one is right for you. With your phone’s storage cleaned up, you should see better performance from your phone and the TikTok app.
Clearing the TikTok Cache on Your Phone
The main reason TikTok takes up a lot of storage on your phone is called the cache. Most apps, including TikTok, save data in the cache on your phone to help them run faster. The cached files will include basic data about the app so that your phone doesn’t have to download everything from the internet every time you open the app.
TikTok’s cached files on your app include your account information, app settings, view history, and data about the videos you’ve watched and liked. The cache doesn’t include the videos themselves, just information about them. It helps your phone use less mobile data when you access TikTok, but all of this data can clog up your storage.
Clearing your cache doesn’t delete this information for good. You’ll still have your TikTok account, your watch history, comments, and more saved to TikTok’s servers. However, you’ll need to log in to TikTok again on your phone once the cache is cleared.
Clearing your Cache On Android
Android phone users can clear their TikTok cache outside of the app. Because of the wide range of Android phones on the market, the exact words or menus that your phone uses may vary from what I mention below. However, all Android users should be able to easily clear their TikTok cache in their phone settings.
Here are the steps you’ll need to follow. Remember, while the words and menus used on your phone may differ slightly, the basic method will remain the same.
- Open your phone’s Settings.
- Find Apps or Applications within the Settings menu. This menu will contain a list of all apps on your phone, usually in alphabetical order.
- Find and select TikTok.
- Select Storage. You can see how many GBs of storage TikTok is taking up on your phone on this page.
- Select Clear Cache. This button may be accompanied by an eraser or broom icon.
This process is simple and should take you less than a minute to complete. It’s a good idea to regularly check how much free storage your phone has available. You should also routinely clear cache files on apps hogging your storage. You can repeat this process for most apps on your phone, not just TikTok, to help your phone run faster.
You can also clear the cache from within the TikTok app itself, which I’ll cover below.
Clearing your Cache On iOS
iPhones don’t allow you to clear cache files from your iOS settings. You’ll have to open the TikTok app itself and delete the cache from there. Not all apps have this option, so these instructions are unique to TikTok.
Here are the steps:
- Launch the TikTok app.
- Select the Me tab at the bottom of the screen. This will open up your profile page.
- Select the three-dot icon in the upper right corner. This icon opens the app’s Settings and Privacy page.
- Select Free Up Space toward the bottom of the Settings page.
- Select which files you want to clear. TikTok allows you to choose between clearing cache files and downloads. The app also displays how much phone storage each category is taking on your phone. You can redownload your filters, stickers, and effects later if you wish.
If you know there are specific TikTok videos that you want to view over and over again, consider downloading them to your phone. That way, you won’t have to open the TikTok app every time you want to view the videos.
Downloading videos can also help you save mobile data, and you won’t be clogging up your cache by opening the app multiple times.
There are several ways to download TikTok videos to your phone. The simplest is from within the TikTok app, but some videos require you to go to extra lengths to download them.
How to Download Videos Within TikTok
Here are the steps to download videos within TikTok:
- Open the video you want to save on TikTok.
- Select the Share button on the lower right side of the screen.
- Select Save Video. This icon will be in the row beneath the row of social media apps. If you’re having trouble, look for an icon with a down arrow.
How to Download Videos Outside TikTok
Not all videos have the option to save them, though. If the video you want to download doesn’t have the “Save Video” icon available, you’ll have to take some extra steps.
Try using a screen recorder. Your phone may already have a screen recorder built-in. If not, you’ll need to download a screen recording app. You can then use the app to record the TikTok video as it plays. Business Insider has some tips for using a screen recorder to save videos if you need a little help.
You can also try downloading the video through Instagram. Share the video to your Instagram stories. While you’re in the Instagram stories interface, you can find the download button. Again, look for a downward-pointing arrow. For more information, Guiding Tech has a set-by-step guide for saving TikTok videos through Instagram, as well as a few other methods you can try.
Using External Storage
If you have an older phone model, you can purchase a micro SD card for extra storage. Unfortunately, many phones produced in the last two to three years no longer have a slot for a micro SD card, so you’ll have to check your phone to see if it has this capability.
Newer phones tend to have much more storage, at least 64GB, which means there’s less need for an external storage device. But for older phones that struggle with storage or slow performance, you can use a micro SD card.
You can find an affordable two-pack Micro Center 64GB, such as the INLAND Memory Card, on Amazon.com. It comes with a SD adapter and a 3-year limited warranty.
If you need even more storage than that, you can purchase cards of up to 512GB. However, keep in mind that the more storage, the more expensive the SD cards are.
The cache that TikTok stores on your phone can be useful, especially if you’re trying to use less mobile data. But that cache can slow down your phone’s performance, so it’s important to clear it from time to time. With your phone’s storage freed up, you should see TikTok and other apps perform better, and you’ll have space to save your own files, too. Other ways to free up storage include downloading the videos and using external storage to store your favorite videos.
